Smoothie to put on Chi Town
Tropical Smoothie Café has established its first
Illinois location, with plans for up to 72 more throughout
the Chicago area. The chains entry into Illinois started
with a franchise at 500 N. Hough St. in Barrington.
Plans call for at least five more restaurants in the
Chicago area by the end of the year and a total of 72
in the next six years, said Brian Guinter, owner of
the Barrington location.
Pinkberry
settles lawsuit
A Los Angeles-based company known for its light
deserts is shelling out some heavy cash to settle a
class action filed by disgruntled customers. Pinkberry
chief executive Ron Graves said Thursday that the frozen
yogurt chain had settled the suit over whether its product
was, technically, frozen yogurt.
Study
Shows 7.3 Million Americans are Vegetarians
The just-released"Vegetarianism in America"
study, published by Vegetarian Times (vegetariantimes.com),
shows that 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million
people, follow a vegetarian-based diet. Approximately
0.5 percent, or 1 million, of those are vegans, who
consume no animal products at all. In addition, 10 percent
of U.S., adults, or 22.8 million people, say they largely
follow a vegetarian-inclined diet.
Apples
cut heart disease, metabolic risk
Adult apple-product consumers had a 27 percent decreased
likelihood of having metabolic syndrome when compared
to non-consumers, a U.S. study found. Dr. Victor Fulgoni
analyzed adult food consumption data collected in the
1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey -- the government's largest food consumption
and health database.

Growing pollution, change in diet and stress are causing
asthma in more and more children. Apple juice can prevent
asthma in children
London: British scientists have found that children
who drink plenty of apple juice may be less likely to
develop symptoms of asthma, a chronic disease that affects
airways.

Blueberries and other phytochemical-rich foods
could help in increasing memory capacity by reversing
age-related deficits in memory, according to a new rat
study by UK researchers.

If
goverment can mess it up, they will: Biofuel
As in the United States, the EU Commission on Monday
rejected claims that producing biofuels is a "crime
against humanity" that threatens food supplies,
and vowed to stick to its goals as part of a climate
change package. "There is no question for now of
suspending the target fixed for biofuels," said
Barbara Helfferich, spokeswoman for EU Environment Commissioner
Stavros Dimas.
